It's been quite a memorable year for Cerritos College women's soccer head coach Ruben Gonzalez. His Falcon team was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Community College Division III National Champions for the second time after they captured their third California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championship. Gonzalez went on to be named the NSCAA National Coach of the Year.

In addition, Gonzalez serves as the head girl's soccer coach at Bishop Amat High School and led that team to the CIF Division III Championship for the second time in three seasons. He was recently named the San Gabriel Valley Tribune Coach of the Year, also for the second time.

"It's been a great year and a lot of wonderful things have happened," said Gonzalez. "It was a great honor to be named the NSCAA National Coach of the Year. I have been blessed to have the coaching staff working with me and also the players that have come through our program at Cerritos. The college and community are involved in our success and it just adds to the overall pleasure of working for Cerritos and coaching the Falcon teams. It's the same at Amat. The players, parents and support staff there make all of the experiences that much more memorable."

After their 4-2 win over Pasadena Poly High to win the CIF Championship, Gonzalez stated, "It's very emotional because we were here last year and weren't able to get it done. You always think the first one is special, but all of them are. This group of young ladies, they believed in the coaching staff and what we preached and they got the job done."

In that championship game, Bishop Amat broke a 2-2 game by scoring twice in the final 11 minutes to secure the championship. Their road to the finals was not an easy one, as Bishop Amat defeated Yorba Linda High, 5-4 in penalty kicks after a scoreless game, while they came back to defeat Diamond Bar High and Righetti High by 4-3 scores. Their first post-season game was a 2-0 decision over Oak Park High.
