ANOTHER RECORD SET BY GABAYERON

For the second day in a row, Cerritos College freshman swimmer Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) not only won an event at the South Coast Conference Championships, she set a new school record. On Thursday, Gabayeron eclipsed a 27-year record in the 500-yard freestyle and followed that by setting a new standard in the 200-yard IM to also win the event. The time of 2:13.66 broke the 12-year time of 2:15.06 by Laura Luevano and helped the Falcons move up to second place in the team standings with one day remaining. Cerritos holds a scant two-point lead over Mt. San Antonio College (330-328), with Chaffey College well head with 471 team points. The third day of the championships will be held at the PCC Aquatic Center.

Gabayeron also won her third individual event and second relay event of the tournament with her championship in the 200-yard freestyle, while also swimming the second leg of the 200-medley relay that won the conference championship. In the 200-yard freestyle, Gabayeron's time of 1:57.80 was two seconds ahead of second place Erica Bender of East Los Angeles College, while the Falcons edged Chaffey in the relay event with a time of 1:56.29, which was less than a second ahead of the Panthers (1:57.53). That quartet consisted of freshman Joselin Figueroa (Paramount HS), Gabayeron, freshman Yuridia Vela (Schurr HS) and sophomore Melinda Guevara (Cerritos HS).

Figueroa also came in third place in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 31.81, with sophomore teammate Brittany Hart (Mayfair HS) a close fourth place in 31.67. Sophomore Karen Aguirre (Downey HS) collected a seventh place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:33.87), while her time of 31.18 in the 50-yard butterfly earned her an eighth place. Freshman Sharon Ku (Cerritos HS) added a sixth place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke with a clocking of 34.98.
