Although he saw his team's eight-game winning streak come to an end, Cerritos College women's water polo coach Sergio Macias is not too concerned about his state's #3-ranked team. The Falcons (16-2), who suffered an 8-3 defeat at the hands of Orange Coast College at the Pasadena City Tournament on Friday, came back to defeat Cuesta College later in the day, 10-8 to start a new winning streak. Cerritos will resume South Coast Conference play at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Chaffey College, a team they defeated a week ago, 14-12 at the San Diego Mesa Tournament.
"I was a little displeased with our first half performance against Orange Coast, so I decided to sit out my starters for the second half," said Macias, whose team was trailing, 6-2 at halftime. "We played them close in the second half and then sat a starter against Cuesta. I'm not as concerned about losing now as I would be in the playoffs."
In that loss, a trio of players scored single goals for Cerritos, but the big stat was sophomore Stephanie Tuning (Los Altos HS) recording nine steals. It helped offset the 14 turnovers the Falcons made, but not enough to equate into goals, as Cerritos missed 17 of their 20 shots. Sophomore Adriana Rodriguez (El Rancho HS) added four steals, while freshman goalkeeper Sharon Ku (Cerritos HS) made seven saves and posted a pair of steals.
Rodriguez and freshman Yuri Vela (Schurr HS) each scored three times in the team's win over Cuesta. The Falcons turned a 3-3 first period game into an 8-5 lead at halftime and a 10-6 lead after the third period. Cerritos was unable to score in the fourth period and held off the Cougars, with Ku recording eight saves and three steals. Tuning added six more steals to give her 51 on the year. She posted 63 her freshman year and is closing in on the single-season school record of 93 set by Hanna Anzai in 2005. Sophomore Shelby Gleason (Los Altos HS) also had six steals in the win.
