Prior to serving as the captain of the US World Cup men’s soccer team, Marcelo Balboa was a two-year All-South Coast Conference defender for the Cerritos College men’s soccer team before moving on to San Diego State University. He played in three FIFA World Cups, earned 128 caps, was one of the pioneers of Major League Soccer, and is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame on the first ballot. His storied career includes being named the U.S. Soccer Athlete of the year twice (1992 and 1994), while he named to the MLS All-Time Best XI. Since retiring from soccer, Balboa has served as a commentator for ABC, ESPN and NBC for coverage of MLS games, FIFA World Cup games and the Olympics. He is currently serving as the head boy’s soccer coach for Monarch High School in Louisville, CO, as well as the executive director for Trebol Soccer Club is Lafayette, CO.
