After helping lead the University of Oklahoma to the Big-12 Conference Championship and a win in the Cotton Bowl, former Cerritos College All-American running back Rhamondre Stevenson has declared his intention to enter the 2021 NFL Draft. Although he had one more season of eligibility due to COVID-19, Stevenson has stated that he will forego that season in favor of turning pro.
Stevenson, who missed the first five games of the season, led the Sooners (9-2) in carries (101), rushing yards (665), touchdowns (7) while averaging 6.6 yards per carry. He capped off his collegiate career by being named the Cotton Bowl's Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for 186 yards on 18 carries and one touchdown. Also a fine receiver out of the backfield, Stevenson caught 18 passes for 211 yards on the year.
On his social media, Stevenson stated, "First, I want to thank God for giving me the blessing of being in the position I'm in. None of this is nearly possible without his guidance. Thank you to Coach (Lincoln) Riley for believing in me coming out of junior college, and just being someone I can lean on at anytime. Since I was seven years old, I knew my aspiration, and that was to play at the highest level of football possible... the NFL. Now I get a chance to reach my lifelong goal."
While with the Falcons as a sophomore, Stevenson, broke the school record for most rushing yards in a season (2,111) in 2019, also led the nation in rushing, while his total was the second most in a season in California Community College history. On the national level, Stevenson's single-season total ranks sixth all-time, and was for 11 games, while two of the totals ahead of him were for 12 games.
Not only did Stevenson lead the country in rushing, he averaged 9.5 yards per carry and scored 16 touchdowns. On September 29, he scorched Long Beach City College for 339 yards on just 18 carries, which included touchdown runs of 70, 60 and 90 yards. He finished the season with five 200-yard rushing performances and had four games where he averaged over 10 yards per carry for the game.
Using his 6-0, 240-pound frame, Stevenson not only ran through defenders, as well as hurdling them, he also outran them by using his breakaway speed. For his efforts, Stevenson was named All-American, as well as the National Division Central League Offensive Player of the Year by a unanimous vote. As a freshman with the Falcons, Stevenson finished second on the team with 501 rushing yards, while leading the team with a 7.4 yards average. He also caught five passes for 38 yards and accounted for five total touchdown.
"What I remember most about playing at Cerritos is all my brothers on that team, and I'm going to miss them like crazy, as well as every single one of the coaches on the staff," added Stevenson after making his decision to sign with Oklahoma. "They pushed me every day and my teammates and coaches are a big part of my success. Cerritos prepared me for the next level by my coaches trying to imitate and get us ready for what's going to go on at the next level which includes balancing school work, meetings, and practice. And conducting ourselves like adults which is vital at the next level."
As a junior with the Sooners, Stevenson carried the ball 64 times for 515 yards and six touchdowns, while his 8.0 yards per carry led the team. He rushed for a touchdown in each of his first five games and eclipsed the 100-yard mark twice, including 109 yards on just five carries against the University of Kansas.
There are currently four former Falcons on NFL rosters - punter Corey Bojorquez (Buffalo), cornerback/punt returner D.J. Reed (Seattle), fullback Elijhaa Penny (NY Giants) and defensive tackle Kyle Peko, who is a Reserve/Higher Risk Opt-Out selection with Denver.
