The pitching duo of sophomores Sierra Gerdts (Montebello HS) and Ally Udell (Whittier Christian HS) combined to shut out visiting Compton College on Thursday in a 9-0, 5-inning Cerritos College South Coast Conference softball win at Nancy Kelly Field. The two limited the Tartars (8-29-1, 2-18) to just two hits on the day, while the Falcons (18-18, 12-9) scored seven times in the third inning and drove in their nine runs on just eight hits.
The team has just three regular season games remaining, with two of them at home. They will host Santiago Canyon (22-12) in a non-conference game at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
The Falcons picked up single runs in the first and second inning, while they took advantage of three Compton errors on the day to help them end the game after five innings. In the first inning, freshman outfielder Haley Davis (Mayfair HS) singled, stole second base and came home on a single from sophomore first baseman Keira Bolinas (Torrance HS). Three walks loaded the bases in the second inning, with Davis clubbing a two-out single to drive in the team's run.
In their seven-run third inning, freshman outfielder Itzel Soto (Long Beach Millikan HS) singled with one out and stole second base. She moved to third base on a single by sophomore outfielder Victoria Medina (Whittier HS/Rio Hondo College) and scored on a fielding error. Freshman second baseman Sophia Collazo (Paramount HS) followed with an RBI single, while an error kept the inning alive and allowed another run to come home. Davis drove in two more runs with a single, while sophomore third baseman Kayla Hernandez (Santa Fe HS) reached base on a fielder's choice, which brought home the final run of the inning.
Gerdts got the start in the circle and worked out of a first inning jam, where Compton put a pair of runners on base with a single and a walk. Gerdts also allowed a leadoff single in the second inning, but went on to retire the next six batters. Udell pitched the final two innings and was the beneficiary of a double play in the fifth inning after an error.
