After receiving a bye in the first round, Mendoza defeated Owen Jones of Santa Rosa, 9-5, while a loss to eventual champion Mario Moreno in the quarterfinals, 2-1, sent him to the consolation round. Mendoza was then eliminated by Michael Rodriguez of Fresno City College, 6-3. Three of the other four entries won their first matches before getting defeated and sent to the consolation bracket. Only Navid Mirzaei (Torrance HS) won another match before getting eliminated.
