Led by three CCCAA State Championships, the Cerritos College athletic program compiled 164 total points, which put them in a close second place in the annual NATYCAA Cup standings. The Falcons, who also came in second place last year, as well as in 2008 and 2009, trailed South Coast Conference rival Mt. San Antonio College, who won their fourth straight title and finished with 169 points.
A college is awarded points based on its team's final positions in post-conference competition. Each college's top-five men's and top-five women's team results count toward the school's overall point total. Complete standings, scoring criteria, and history of the NATYCAA Cup is available on the CCCAA website, http://cccaasports.org/NATYCAA/index.
NATYCAA is the professional organization of two-year college athletic administrators and membership is open to all two-year institutions throughout the country. The NATYCAA Awards were designed to recognize and reward overall program excellence at the two-year college level. The criterion for the State Association's division was developed by the CCCAA in conjunction with the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA). This is the thirteenth year that NATYCAA has sponsored a State Association's division.
Cerritos earned state titles in three women's sports - soccer, tennis and track and field - all good for 20 points each, while they received 15 points for finishing in sixth place at the cross country state championships and 10.5 points in softball for reaching the super regional. The top point total on the men's side came from wrestling (18 points) for placing third place, with the men's tennis team racking up 17.5 points for reaching the Southern California team championships.
