The combination of a 5-1 Cerritos College baseball win, coupled with a 2-1 Long Beach City College loss keeps a chance of a second straight South Coast Conference title alive. The Falcons posted their win over visiting Los Angeles Harbor College on Thursday at Kincaid Field, while the Vikings were defeated by ECC Compton Center. The final regular season game is slated for tomorrow, and a combination of a Cerritos win and LB City loss leaves the conference with a three-way tie for the championship for the second year in a row. All games are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. with Cerritos playing in Wilmington.
Sophomore outfielder Mark Pena (Bell Gardens HS) gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning with his first home run of the season. The Seahawks were able to push across a run against sophomore starting pitcher Kyle Carpenter (Mayfair HS), who went seven innings to improve to 5-2. Freshman Jerald Johnston (California HS) earned his sixth save of the season.
In the sixth inning, sophomore third baseman Victor Guadalupe (La Quinta HS) led off with a base hit and with runners on first and second base, freshman Jesse Perdomo (California HS) drove him in with a double. A balk brought in Perdomo from third base with two outs. Guadalupe drove in the fifth run of the game with a bases loaded sacrifice fly.
Perdomo finished the day 3-for-4, while Pena and Guadalupe each had two hits. Carpenter allowed one run on six hits and struck out six batters.
