Looking to stay within striking distance of the South Coast Conference championship, the Cerritos College men's soccer team recorded a 4-2 win over host Pasadena City College on Tuesday. The win improved the Falcons season mark to 14-1-1 overall and 8-1-0 in the SCC, which is good for second place. Cerritos, ranked #3 in the country among Division III (non-scholarship) schools by the National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) return home to host El Camino College at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
The Falcons struck early against the struggling Lancers (6-6-4, 1-5-3), as sophomore Alejandro Covarrubias (Bell HS) scored into the lower left corner on a free kick in the second minute. That jump-started the Cerritos team, as they controlled the game and struck again right before halftime for a 2-0 lead. In the 43rd minute, freshman Angel Ayala (Cabrillo HS) scored his eighth goal of the season into the corner of the net after receiving a crossing pass from freshman Carlos Escobar (Roosevelt HS).
Pasadena City did make a game out of it with their second half goal in the 58th minute to cut the Falcons lead in half, as Irving Rosales scored his first of two goals when he punched the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Danny Lizama (Duarte HS). However, in the 58th minute, sophomore Aaron Macedo (South Gate HS) was brought down in the box on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty kick that he converted for a 3-1 lead.
It was a 4-1 Cerritos advantage in the 87th minute when freshman Christian Alvarez (Cabrillo HS) planted the ball over replacement goalie Michael Alcaraz, with Escobar receiving the assist. Pasadena City tacked on their second goal in the 90th minute, but it wasn't enough, and the Falcons win their fourth game in a row. Lizama finished the game with two saves.
