Looking to make an early impact against rival Long Beach City College, the Cerritos College softball team scored four times in the first inning. The Falcons (4-5, 2-2) carried that offensive momentum into the third inning, where they added six more runs on their way to a 10-2, 5-inning win over the Vikings in a South Coast Conference game on Thursday at Nancy Kelly Field. The team will now host Chaffey College at 3:00 p.m. on Friday in another conference game.
In the first inning, freshman outfielder Haley Davis (Mayfair HS) drew a lead-off walk and was sacrificed to second base. After sophomore first baseman Keira Bolinas (Torrance HS) was walked, sophomore third baseman Kayla Hernandez (Santa Fe HS) drilled a two-run double to get Cerritos on the board. A single by sophomore second baseman Deja Sendejas (El Rancho HS) was followed by a walk to sophomore outfielder Victoria Medina (Whittier HS/Rio Hondo College), which loaded the bases. Freshman outfielder Itzel Soto (Long Beach Millikan HS) made it a 3-0 lead with a base hit, while a Vikings error allowed the fourth run to score.
Freshman starting pitcher Skyler Swearingen (Mayfair HS) allowed a first inning run, and after getting the first two outs in the second inning, walked the next two batters and then allowed an infield single to load the bases. That brought in sophomore Ally Udell (Whittier Christian HS), who recorded the final out and then went the rest of the way. In her 3 1/3 innings of work, Udell (1-0) allowed one run on three hits and retired the final six batters after surrendering a run-scoring single in the third inning.
The Falcons put the game out of reach with their six-run third inning. Hernandez led off with a single and after moving to second base on an infield out, scored on a single by Medina. Soto and sophomore designated player Nicoal Magdaleno (La Habra HS) followed with consecutive RBI doubles, while three more walks forced in a run. Hernandez finished off the scoring with a two-run single.
On the day, Hernandez went 3-for-3 with four RBI, while Soto was also 3-for-3 with a pair of runs driven in. Davis drew a pair of walks and came home to score on both, with Sendejas collecting a pair of hits.
