W. Swimming: Falcons earn All-American honors

After an 11th place finish at the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships, the Cerritos College women's swimming team had three relay teams and swimmers in eight events earn California All-American recognition. Heading the list are sophomore Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) and freshman Raquel Gabayeron (Cerritos HS), who each earned All-American honors in six events, while freshman Carla Harvey (Potomac Falls, VA HS) was honored in four events. For her career, Katherine Gabayeron earned nine total All-American honors.

Both the 200-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay teams set new school records at the South Coast Conference Championships, with their times earning them All-American recognition. The quartet of the Gabayeron sisters, along with freshmen Milena Hernandez (Cerritos HS) and Angela Covarrubias (Paramount HS) posted the 11th fastest time in the state in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:42.11, while Harvey, the Gabayerons and Covarrubias placed ninth at the state championships and recorded the 10th fastest time in the 200-yard medley relay in the state this year at 1:52.81. That same quartet registered a clocking of 4:09.34 in the 400-medley relay to come in 12th place at the state championships, which was also the 12th fastest time in the state.

Individually, Katherine Gabayeron and Raquel Gabayeron earned All-American honors in three events, with Harvey in two events. Katherine Gabayeron recorded the fifth fastest time in the state in the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.73), the ninth fastest in the 200-yard IM (2:13.93) and 11th fastest time in the state in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.92). She finished sixth at the state championships in the 200-yard IM and ninth in the 200-yard freestyle. As for Raquel Gabayeron, her school record time of 1:01.21 in the 100-yard IM was the ninth fastest in the state, while she placed 11th at the state championships. She also turned in the eighth best time in the 100-yard butterfly (58.61) and 15th fastest time in the 50-yard butterfly at 26.95. Harvey's time of 1:00.97 in the 100-yard backstroke was the 13th best in the state and recorded the 15th best time of 28.50 in the 50-yard backstroke.
