TURNOVERS COST FALCONS CRUCIAL GAME

In an uncharacteristic performance, the Cerritos College women's basketball team turned the ball over 31 times and at the end of the game, was forced to foul Pasadena City College in their South Coast Conference game on Wednesday night. The end result was a 78-66 loss that puts the team's second place standing in the conference in jeopardy. The Falcons (19-6 overall), who entered the night with a one-game lead over third place Long Beach City College, maintained their spot after first place Mt. San Antonio defeated the Vikings on Wednesday. LBCC and East Los Angeles are now just a game behind Cerritos, while the Falcons have to play both teams before the end of the regular season. They will host Long Beach City at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday at Gahr High School and then travel to East Los Angeles next Wednesday, with two more games to be played after that.

In the first half against the host Lancers (12-11, 6-5), the Falcons turned the ball over 22 times, but trailed by just two points, 26-24. In addition to their inability to make the most of their offensive possessions, Cerritos also found themselves in foul trouble and Pasadena City was staying ahead by converting their free throws, especially in the second half, when they netted 24-of-31. The final 18 points of the game for the Lancers came from the free throw line, with Vera Machado converting 9-of-10 at the end of the game and 10-of-12 on the night and 20 points to go along with her 10 rebounds.

Cerritos controlled the boards all night, pulling down 71, with 33 of them coming on the offensive end. But they shot only 28.2% from the field and was only 16-of-30 from the charity stripe. By the end of the game, four Falcons had fouled out of the game and were left reeling by their missed opportunities.

Although she was limited to six points, sophomore forward Dershawna Staves (Bellflower HS) led everyone with 16 rebounds and three blocked shots before fouling out, while freshman guard Marissa Rendon (St. Paul HS) paced the team with 23 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals before fouling out. Sophomore forward Andrina Rendon (St. Paul HS) added 20 points and eight rebounds for the Falcons, while freshman guard Angela Pena (Huntington Park College Ready Academy HS) accounted for seven points and five rebounds. Marquette Stokes les all scorers for the Lancers with 24 points.
