LEAD AND SECOND PLACE SLIP AWAY

With a win over host East Los Angeles College on Wednesday night, the Cerritos College women's basketball team almost assuredly would have clinched second place by themselves in the competitive South Coast Conference. For the majority of the game, the Falcons were on their way to a win over the Huskies, but were unable to hold the lead and eventually suffered a 62-58 defeat. The loss drops Cerritos (20-7, 10-4) a half game behind East LA (20-5, 10-3) with two games left to play. The Falcons will travel to Los Angeles Southwest College next Wednesday for a 5:00 p.m. contest, while the Huskies must still play first place Mt. San Antonio this Friday.

After opening up  a 10-point lead (36-26) with 14:28 left in the second half when freshman guard Talor Hixon (St. Anthony HS) drained a three-pointer, the Falcons slowly saw their lead dissolve, thanks to Huskies guard Keyanna Johnson, who would go on to score 13 of her team's next 15 points over a 5:11 span and then take the lead on a jumper by Antineisha Hill with 6:22 remaining for a 43-42 advantage ELAC would not relinquish the remainder of the game.

The East LA lead swelled to 57-49 after a Hill basket with 2:04 left, but the Falcons had one final run left. A pair of free throws by sophomore forward Andrina Rendon (St. Paul HS) and a steal and basket from freshman guard Marissa Rendon (St. Paul HS) got the team to within striking distance. Andrina Rendon, who scored 17 points and pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds before fouling out, hit a three-pointer to make the score 58-56 with :40 seconds left, while a pair of free throws from freshman forward Diamond Roberts (Mayfair HS) put the score at 59-58 with :20.9 seconds left. But East LA made three of their final free throws, and a missed three-pointer by Marissa Rendon sealed the loss.

Hixon (nine points, five rebounds), sophomore forward Dershawna Staves (Bellflower HS) and sophomore guard Armelia Patterson (Long Beach Millikan HS) all finished with nine points, while the Falcons out-rebounded the Huskies, 55-47. Cerritos turned the ball over 30 times on the night, which resulted in a 24-12 scoring advantage for East LA.
