The Cerritos Falcons baseball team used a big sixth inning and timely late inning offense to rally past Taft College, 7-4, on Friday afternoon.
Trailing 4-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Falcons flipped the game with a three-run frame and never looked back, adding insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings to secure the win.
Cerritos struck first in the opening inning when Jose Perez brought home Luke Crowder with an RBI groundout. Taft answered with a three-run second inning, capitalizing on miscues to take a 3-1 lead, but Cerritos answered to get one run back when CJ Berthon stepped into the box and sent a long ball over the fence in left center.
The Cougars added another run in the sixth to extend their advantage to 4-2. The Falcons responded immediately in the bottom half of the sixth. After loading the bases, CJ Berthon drew a walk to force in a run, and Wyatt Ormonde delivered the biggest swing of the game with a ground-rule double to left center, driving in two to take the lead 5-4.
Cerritos continued its momentum in the seventh as Mateo Heredia lined an RBI single to right field, extending the Falcons lead. An inning later, Andrew Perez added an RBI double down the left field line to push the lead to 7-4.
At the plate, Cerritos tallied nine hits, led by Tyler Peshke's two-hit, two-run performance. Ormonde finished with two doubles and two RBI, while Berthon added a solo home run and two RBI. Heredia and Andrew Perez also drove in runs as part of the balanced offensive effort.
On the mound, Logan Hunt (4-3) earned the victory, tossing seven innings and allowing four runs - just one earned - while scattering eight hits. Lakaea Correa was dominant in relief, closing the door with two hitless innings and striking out two to earn his first save of the season.
The Falcons are back to SCC action next week when they take on LA Harbor.
