For the second week in a row, the Cerritos College football team put up big numbers, thanks to multiple big plays. The Falcons (3-1, 1-0) won their third game in a row, as they defeated host Orange Coast College 68-0. Last Saturday, Cerritos put 66 points on the board against Santa Barbara City College. Next week, the Falcons will host College of the Canyons in a 6:00 p.m. National Conference Central Division game.
Cerritos scored on their first two series to get things going. Sophomore Trey Pinkney (Bellflower HS) returned the opening kickoff 48 yards, which put the team in Pirates territory. Pinkney then caught a seven-yard pass on fourth down, which was followed by a 21-yard scoring strike from freshman quarterback Jeremiah Calvin (Mayfair HS) to freshman wide receiver Charles Clinton II (Long Beach Poly HS).
On the first defensive play by Orange Coast, sophomore linebacker Rocky Jack (Summer Creek, TX HS/Orange Coast College), who played for the Pirates last season, forced a fumble after a completed pass. Sophomore defensive back Mike Evans (Downey HS) pounced on the loose ball, giving the Falcons possession at the OCC 33-yard line. Calvin and freshman wide receiver Michael Ashford (Narbonne HS) accounted for all of the yards, with the second play resulting in an 11-yard touchdown strike.
In the second quarter, the Falcons would score four touchdowns, giving them a commanding 42-0 lead. The 42 points in a half were the second most in school history, with the record coming in 2008, as Cerritos scored 51 points in the first 30 minutes against East Los Angeles College.
The third play of the second quarter saw sophomore running back Josh Cason (Long Beach Poly HS) scamper in from four yards out. The defense held once again, forcing an Orange Coast punt. Sophomore wide receiver Malachi Wright (Mayfair HS) opened the drive by pulling in a 15-yard pass from freshman quarterback Nick Miali (Foothill HS), while the drive ended on a 14-yard passing touchdown to Ashford, his second of the half. A 10-play, 83-yard drive followed, with the Falcons converting a pair of third down plays. Pinkney made the big play on the drive, as he caught a pass and raced 49 yards, which put Cerritos in the red zone. Sophomore running back Nick Adimora (Mayfair HS/Eastern Washington University) capped off the drive with a six-yard touchdown run.
Calvin returned to the lineup on the next drive and tossed his third touchdown pass of the first half, as he found freshman Alex Martinez (Cerritos HS) with a 34-yard scoring strike. Wright opened the drive with a 38-yard reception, with freshman JoJo Apisala (Lakewood HS) grabbing a pass out of the backfield and racing 21 yards. The final touchdown of the half came with five seconds left on the clock.
Orange Coast looked to ruin the shoutout early in the fourth quarter until freshman defensive back Keion Andrew (Downey HS) stepped in front of a Keanu Vasquez pass at the Falcons 2-yard line. Other than the last play of the game, it marked the only time the Pirates were in Falcon territory in the second half and just the third time all game.
Calvin (15-for-20, 236 yards) and Miali (6-for-9, 174 yards) combined to throw for five touchdown passes, with Ashford and Clinton II each pulling in a pair. On the night, 14 different players caught at least one pass, while freshman running back Romeo Clark (Warren HS/Simpson University) rushed 10 times for 98 yards and two touchdowns to lead the ground game. Freshman kicker Jonathan Arreola (Mayfair HS) converted all eight of his extra point attempts.
The quartet of Brandon Roth (Garden Grove HS), Ezra Mueller (Norwalk HS), Anthony Irons (Buena Park HS) and Sergio Carrillo (Banning HS) tied for the team lead with four tackles, with Jack adding three stops to go with his forced fumble. Freshman linebacker JD Noa (pictured, left; North Torrance HS) recorded 1 1/2 quarterback sacks and also forced a fumble for the Cerritos defense. Due to the lopsided scored, 29 different players posted at least one tackle for the Falcons.
