As a member of the 2009-10 Cerritos College men's basketball coach, Greg Howell was considered to be one of the team leaders both on and off the court. He helped the Falcons to an 18-11 record and a berth in the Southern California Regional Playoffs. It was the first season under current head coach Russ May, and although Howell could have returned for his sophomore season, accepted a scholarship to Walford (IA) University, where he set their career steals record.
After spending the last season as the Video Coordinator at Rice University where he prepared all post-practice video for the coaches and team. Additionally, he prepared video on all upcoming opponents. At the conclusion of the season, it was announced that Howell was added to the coaching staff as an assistant coach. Owls head coach Scott Pera, who has known Howell since his head coaching days at Arizona State University, asked him to join the Rice program prior to the start of the season.
Howell (pictured, left with the Falcons) spent four years as Director and Head Coach of the Team Harden AAU basketball program, where he handled all administrative responsibilities while developing and implementing training programs for all teams. Pera recruited Harden out of Artesia High, where Howell was a teammate at the time. Prior to Team Harden, Howell served as a Marketing Associate and Scouting Assistant for the Houston Rockets. While with the Rockets, he assisted with online scouting future potential prospects while creating detailed reports on player's on-court performance.
With the Falcons, Howell averaged 6.4 points a game, along with two rebounds and two assists a game. He picked up his scoring in conference play to 8.5 and scored a season-high 22 points.
"I am proud and excited to be named the new men's basketball assistant coach at Rice University," said Howell to the Rice website. "I would like to thank Coach Pera and Rice for giving me the opportunity. I'm blessed and thrilled to work alongside a great staff and a group of young student-athletes. I look forward to the continued success and growth of the Rice men's basketball program. Go Owls!"
