For the first time in Cerritos College history, a student-athlete has received the Don McKenzie Scholarship. Joshua Harrison, a member of the men's basketball team was selected by the conference committee for his academic and athletic success. The MacKenzie Scholarships annually go to student-athletes who exhibit strong academics and high performance on the field of play. In several cases, the student-athletes chosen are ones who also have overcome obstacles and involve themselves in community service. The awards honor the memory of MacKenzie, the long-time SCC commissioner from 1979 until his passing in 2004.
Harrison earned an AA degree in Business Administration and will carry that major (concentrating in finance and marketing) to his next destination as a scholarship-athlete for NAIA Westcliff University in Irvine. He is the first in his family to become a college student and volunteers at the Southwest Gospel Ministry to Children, as well as serving as a youth basketball coach.
A team captain for the Falcons, he helped tem win a SCC Co-South Division title in 2019-20. Born in Redlands, the 6-foot-3 guard played his prep basketball as an All-District player at Onate (NM) High. After joining the Cerritos program in 2017, he mourned the loss of his father from a heart attack in 2018, then stepped away from basketball for a year before returning for the 2019-20 season, where he averaged 5.3 points a game as a key player off the Falcons bench.
"Josh definitely expressed interest in staying at Cerritos for another season, but he was ready to move on academically with his AA degree and a 3.8 GPA", stated head coach Russ May. "It did not make sense to stay back when academically he was ready to move on. He grey-shirted his first year and then during his second year he lost his father unexpectedly, so he has really overcome so much and wanted to progress. Also with Covid, he has three years left to play."
"I was always making differences on the defensive side of the ball, and throughout the season, my roll offensively grew as I began adjusting well to our system, coupled with Coach May trusting me to take on more production and be more aggressive looking to play-make," stated Harrison. "The experience and coaching gained from Cerritos has been an integral part of my development as a player. With my playmaking ability and defensive intensity, I feel that I can help to keep the pace and flow of games in Westcliff's favor throughout the game and down the stretch."
Harrison earned his AA degree in Marketing, Business Administration and Business Management with a cumulative 3.8 GPA and was a member of the President's Honor List in three separate semesters with a 4.0 GPA. At Westcliff University, Harrison will be majoring in Business Administration with a focus on Marketing.
