One of the main offensive sparks off the bench for the Cerritos College men's basketball team, forward Andrew Mata (Schurr HS/Holy Cross (IN) College) has signed with Lewis & Clark State College. He's the second Falcon off their Elite 8 team to make their four-year commitment and joins Jordun Willard (Paramount HS), who committed to Southwestern Christian (OK) University. Mata was a South Coast Conference Honorable Mention selection.
Mata, who transferred to Cerritos from Holy Cross (IN) College, appeared in 31 games and made 12 starts. He averaged 8.8 points and 2.0 rebounds a game, while he led the team in three-point shooting by making 84-of-199 (42.2%). His 84 three-pointers are tied for the fourth most in a season in school history. Mata had at least one three-pointer in every game he played, which included knocking down a season high 7-of-9 against Santa Monica College for 23 points, also a season best. He scored 17 points against Compton College, which included going 5-for-5 from long range and had 12 points in five other games.
While at Holy Cross, Mata appeared in 26 games and averaged 4.3 points and 1.8 rebounds a game. He converted 28-of-75 three-pointers and scored a season-high 12 points with five rebounds and a trio of three-pointers against Indiana Northwest, while he posted 10 points against Waldorf College and Moody Bible College.
He will be joining a Warriors team that went 24-8 last season and qualified for the NAIA Tournament with an at-large bid after advancing to the championship game of the Cascade Conference Tournament. In their first round NAIA Tournament game, the Warriors dropped an 81-73 game against Saint Francis (IN). Along with other incoming recuits, Lewis & Clark returns six players from last season and Mata will be looked to add offense immediately.
