SEASON COMES TO AN END FOR CERRITOS

After opening the Southern California Regional Playoffs on Saturday with a 5-4 loss to visiting Southwestern College, the Cerritos College softball team knew that they would need to win twice on Sunday to advance to the Super Regional next weekend. The win would not be in the cards for the #3-seeded Falcons (29-10), who dropped a 15-7, 6-inning loss to the #14-seeded Jaguars (27-12) at Nancy Kelly Field to end their season. Cerritos trailed, 8-1 after the first three innings, and got as close as 9-7 after five innings. But that's when Southwestern scored six times in the sixth inning to end the game on a mercy rule.

Freshman pitcher Lily Cornejo (Paramount HS) had her worst game of the season, allowing 15 runs on 19 hits, as she showed signs of wearing down as the game progressed. Her teammates were able to score six straight runs to get to within 9-7, but could not finish the sixth inning. Four different Southwestern players had three hits on the day, while a pair of them - Briana Albreksten and Alex Ross - drove in four runs.

Down 8-1 heading into the fourth inning, the Falcons started their run at getting back in the game, as sophomore outfielder Maiya Tallakson (Redondo Union HS) doubled in a run, before sophomore outfielder Lauren Castrellon (Downey HS) brought in another run with an infield out. Sophomore third baseman Krista Mele (California HS) followed with her second home run in as many days, a two-run blast. Freshman catcher Ally Catania (Pacifica HS) contributed a two-run double in the fifth inning, but was stranded at third base.

The Jaguars opened the scoring on a three-run home run by Albreksten in the first inning, while Ross clubbed a three-run shot in the third inning to help them open up their early lead. In the sixth inning Monica Armas added a two-run home run, with four other players adding run-scoring singles in the final frame.
