It was only four seasons ago that the first person in Cerritos College women's soccer history eclipsed the 40-goal mark. Back in 2014, Ashley Anaya-Webb put 42 shots into the net in leading the Falcons to the National Championship and the CCCAA State Championship. With one regular season game remaining, along with the post-season, sophomore Sydney Carr (El Modena HS/UC Irvine) has flown past that record after scoring four goals in the team's 12-0 South Coast Conference South Division win over visiting El Camino College on Tuesday. With her four tallies, Carr now has 43 goals on the year and quite possibly could become the first 50-goal scorer in CCCAA history. Cerritos (19-0-0, 7-0-0) closes out their regular season with a 1:00 p.m. match at Long Beach City College and will then embark on a trip back to the state championship. Last year, the Falcons saw their five-year state championship winning streak come to an end.
Carr picked up her first goal of the day just 5:50 into the match when she used her speed to get past the Warriors (5-13-1, 3-4-1) defense and scored into the far lower post. Just 10 minutes later, Carr was pulled down in the 18-yard box by Guadalupe Tovar, with sophomore Serena Camacho (Los Osos HS/UC Irvine) stepping up to convert her fourth penalty kick in as many games. Just one minute later, it was Carr on a pass from Camacho that made it a 3-0 score when her hard shot hit the inside portion of the far post and careened into the net.
One of the main reasons that the record has been able to be broken is the team's tenacity for 90 minutes, as well as their ability to control possession of the ball for the majority of every game. The Falcon defense uses their speed and precision passing, which is coupled by the forwards who are even faster and aggressive going toward the opposing team's net.
By the end of the first half, it was a 9-0 Cerritos lead, with Carr tying the school record in the final minute. Three of the team's goals were assisted on by Camacho, who moved into the state lead with 22 helpers. The school record came in the 60th minute, as Camacho sent a pass on the edge and Carr used her speed and strength to score into an open part of the net. As she came off the field for a substitution, Carr showed her enthusiasm in breaking the record.
The lopsided win allowed for six players to score goals, as Camacho posted three goals and four assists for a 10-point game. The point total secured her spot in second place in the state behind Carr on the year, as Camacho has amassed 80 points to the 105 by Carr. In the 2014 season, Cerritos had a pair of 100-point scorers, with Nayeli Requejo (103 points) joining Anaya-Webb (102).
Freshman Claudia Paz (Huntington Park HS), who has picked up her scoring after the loss of sophomore All-American Mia Ramirez (Torrance HS) to a season-ending injury, posted a pair of goals and an assist. Freshman Natalie Garcia (Santa Ana HS) also took advantage of scoring chances and recorded a goal and two assists, as did freshman Valeria Corrilo (Dominguez HS). Paz now has six goals on the year, while Corrilo increaded her season totals to 14 goals and 17 assists this season.
The Falcons have now out-scored their opponents, 118-1 this season and are closing in on the school record for most goals in a season (137 in 2014), while they allowed a season-low six goals that year, as well. That record is on pace to also get broken.
