FALCONS COME IN SECOND PLACE AT SCC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Holding out several athletes who have automatically qualified for the Southern California Preliminaries, which will take place at San Diego Mesa College next Saturday, may have cost the Cerritos College women's track and field team the South Coast Conference Championship on Friday at Compton College. With several athletes already posting qualifying times, the coaching staff decided to rest them and still came close to winning the conference title. The Falcons finished with 162 team points, which trailed only Mt. San Antonio College, who won the title with 178 team points. Cerritos earned 119.5 of those points in the field events.

In addition to their success in the javelin and hammer on Tuesday, Cerritos also finished in the top four spots in the discus with sophomore Priscilla Gardner (Mission Viejo HS) winning the conference championship with a distance of 48.15 meters, while freshman Larrisha Fields (Lakewood HS) improved on her fourth best throw in school history with a second place finish of 42.95 meters. Freshman Tiffany Gray (El Dorado HS) took third place with a throw of 39.75 meters, while freshman Tuki Sauvao (Artesia HS) earned a fourth place finish at 39.16 meters. Gardner picked up her second title of the day with a shot put that travelled 13.41 meters, while Gray was third at 12.00 meters. Sophomore Destini Poplar (Bellflower HS) posted a sixth place distance of 11.56 meters, with Sauvao (11.35 meters) and Fields (11.29 meters) in seventh and eighth place, respectively.

Freshman Courtny Clark (Warren HS) earned a second place finish in the high jump with a leap that cleared 1.57 meters, while freshman Mariah Harris (Leuzinger HS) tied for fifth place at 1.52 meters. In the long jump, sophomore Regina DeVaughn (Bellflower HS) came in fifth place at 5.20 meters.

In the running events, sophomore Vernasha Poole (Cheyenne, NV HS) came in fourth place in the 100 meters at 12.41, while her time of 25.73 earned her a sixth place finish in the 200 meters. Sophomore Blair Allen (Lynwood HS) recorded a time of 58.53 to come in fifth place in the 400 meters, with sophomore Brandi Sexton (Lynwood HS) finished in fourth place in the 800 meters with a clocking of 2:23.35. In the hurdles, sophomore Lily Trinh (Fountain Valley HS) took third in both the 100-meter HH (15.90) and 400-meter IH (1:04.55), with the quartet of Allen, Poole, Trinh and Sexton placing fourth in the 1600-meter relay in a time of 4:03.76.
