Led by a 28-point performance from freshmen thrower Mackenzie Monson (South Torrance HS), the Cerritos College women's track and field team finished in fourth place at the Southern California Championships at Saddleback College on Saturday. The Falcons finished with 107.5 team points and were just five points behind San Diego Mesa College for third place. The team will be advancing 14 entries to the 3C2A State Championships at San Mateo College next weekend.

Monson won the Southern California championship in both the shot put (13.33 meters) and discus (43.94 meters), while her distance of 52.28 meters was good for second place. She was defeated by Abigail Gavrilovic of Orange Coast College, who turned in the best distance in the state this year at 52.98, which surpassed the throw of 52.49 meters Monson set at the conference championships last weekend. The 13.33 meters by Monson in the shot put moved her into second place in the state and closer to the leading distance of 13.35 meters by Jane Taufa of San Mateo.
