Earning 48 of their team points in the three throwing events, the Cerritos College women's track and field team sits in second place after the South Coast Conference Prelims on Tuesday. The Falcons, who have 73 points, will compete in the SCC Finals on Saturday at Long Beach City College.
Cerritos finished in first place in three of the five events that were scored on Tuesday.
Improving in her personal best distance was freshman hammer thrower Mackenzie Monson (South Torrance HS), who won the event with a distance of 52.49 meters. She currently has the third best distance in school history and also improved on her state-leading distance. Sophomore teammate Emily Ortiz (Tustin HS) recorded the second best throw on the day with a distance of 44.95, while sophomore Tupouahau Tauaika (Orange Lutheran HS/UC Davis) posted a fourth place distance of 40.44 meters. Freshman Maria Fuerte (California HS) also scored two team points with her seventh place result of 34.33 meters.
It was Tauaika who won the shot put, as she recorded a season best distance of 12.88 meters, who also moved her into third place in the state. Monson, who owns the state's second best distance of 12.95 meters, settled for second place with a throw of 12.69 meters, as the two earned 18 points in the event. Ortiz also came in fourth place in the event with a throw of 11.19 meters.
Also winning an event on the day was freshman Camrynn Williams, who recorded a distance of 5.40 meters in the long jump to secure 10 team points for the Falcons. In fact, Cerritos took the top three places, with sophomore Simone Terry (Carson HS/Long Beach City College) coming in second place at 5.25 meters, while freshman Leeann Hong (Westminster HS) was a close third place at 5.22 meters.
