W. Cross Country: Cerritos goes up against four-year competition in Santa Clara

Running in the Bronco Invitational at Baylands Park on Saturday, the Cerritos College women's cross country team finished in ninth place out of 11 schools with 194 team points. Hosted by Santa Clara University, the Falcons were the lone community college school running in the invitational. The team will take next week off to train for the South Coast Conference Championships, which will take place at Mt. San Antonio College on October 31.

Competing in the 6K Open Division, Cerritos saw Monserrat Malo (Warren HS) complete the course in a time of 24:03.8, which put her in 38th place overall. Her time moved her into fifth place on the school's all-time list for 6000 meters, with two more runners also cracking the Top 10.

Coming in 58th place out of 117 runners, Esther Gonzalez (Warren HS) recorded a time of 24:50.4, as she edged out three other runners at the finish line. She also put her name ninth on the college's all-time list, while Jayla Barnwell (Warren HS) saw her time of 24:58.7 take 63rd on the day and places her 10th in the college's list.

The duo of Viviana Martinez (Downey HS) and Samantha Thompson (Downey HS) rounded out the team's first five runners that helped comprise the team score. Martinez came in 68th place with a clocking of 25:18.9, while Thompson turned in a time of 25:25.4, which earned her a 69th place result.

Also running on the day for the Falcons included Victoria Ruiz (California HS; 25:53.9; 78th place), Jessica Jordan (Narbonne HS; 26:56.6; 93rd place) and Keily Juarez (Warren HS; 26:59.9; 94th place).
