Taking part in the 3C2A State Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno on Saturday, the Cerritos College women's cross country team finished in 10th place. The Falcons, who finished with 309 team points, placed 11th last season after a pair of seasons where they finished ninth place or better.
Competing in the 5K race, the tandem of Jayla Barnwell (Warren HS) and Esther Gonzalez (Warren HS) finished in a virtual tie. Barwell was clocked in 19:57.5 and earned 59th place, while Gonzalez was clocked in 19:57.6 and took 60th place out of 169 total runners. It would be 21 seconds later before the next Falcons runner would complete the course, as Monserrat Malo (Warren HS) earned a 77th place time of 20:18.1. She was sitting 10 places higher until the final 0.7 of a mile and had several runners pull past her down the stretch.
Just as the first two Cerritos runners finished together, so did the final two scoring competitors, as they posted times one second apart. Coming in 94th place overall, Victoria Ruiz (California HS) recorded a time of 20:41.6, while Samantha Thompson (Downey HS) moved up six places near the end of the race to come in 95th place with a clocking of 20:42.7.
Also running for the Falcons were Viviana Martinez (Downey HS), who came in 109th place at 21:04.0, while Jessica Jordan (Narbonne HS) crossed the finish line in 135th place with a time of 21:52.3.
