With only three games left in the regular season, the Cerritos College women's soccer team was able to maintain their perfect season, as they recorded a 6-0 South Coast Conference win at Mt. San Antonio College on Friday. The Falcons (18-0-0, 12-0-0) remain ranked #1 in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) for Division III (non-scholarship) and will travel to face ECC Compton Center at Compton College on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. SCC contest.
Continuing to use their speed on the outside, the Falcons needed just five minutes to get on the board, as freshman Lauren Nanez (La Mirada HS) dribbled the ball down the right side and sent a crossing pass to sophomore Monica Ramirez (Segerstrom HS/Irvine Valley College), who slotted a shot past the Mountie goalkeeper. Cerritos then scored a pair of goals within six minutes apart near the end of the first half to take a sizeable 3-0 lead into halftime.
In the 35th minute, sophomore Susana Mendoza (Paloma Valley HS) fed freshman Chelsea Villegas (Bishop Amat HS) down the right side, where she dribbled around the final Mt. SAC defender to go in alone at the goalkeeper and beat her with a hard, low shot. Six minutes mater, Villegas sent the ball over the top, as the defenders tried to play the offside trap, which left sophomore Jennifer Vega (Norwalk HS) facing the keeper. She made a quick move to get around the goalkeeper and scored into an empty net.
Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Ropp (Lakewood HS) posted five saves in recording her fifth shutout of the season, but first in a game she played all 90 minutes.
In the second half, freshman Gaby Zamarripa (Artesia HS) started the rush for the team's fourth goal when she passed the ball to freshman Tatiana Valentin (Santiago HS), where she found Ramirez and the top of the box. Ramirez scored her second goal of the game when she completed the attack with a nice shot into the upper corner of the net. Just three minutes later, the Falcons stole a poor cleaning pass, where Nanez fed Zamarripa, who chipped the ball past the keeper, who was out of position. The sixth goal of the game came in the 75th minute when sophomore Martha Rodriguez (Artesia HS) sent a long pass from the left side that pulled the keeper away from the net. Nanez was there to receive the pass and placed the ball into the net for an easy goal.
