CERRITOS CONTINUES TO DOMINATE

The Cerritos College posted their fourth shutout in a row, and 13th of the season, as they dominated ECC Compton Center on Tuesday to the tune of a 7-0 victory. The win by the nation's top-ranked team improved their record to 19-0-0 overall and 13-0-0 in the South Coast Conference with just two regular season games remaining. The Falcons, who clinched their sixth conference championship in a row two weeks ago, will travel to East Los Angeles College for a 3:00 p.m. SCC affair on Thursday and then finish with a 3:00 p.m. non-conference game at home against defending state champion San Bernardino Valley College.

After going the first half without scoring against ECC Compton Center, Cerritos scored all seven of their goals over a 34-minute span in the second half, with six of the them coming in 13 minutes. The scoring started in the 51st minute when freshman Lisette Lopez (Maywood Academy HS) sent a crossing pass from the right side, to freshman Victoria Carter (La Mirada HS), who scored on a one-timer from 20 yards out. Five minutes later, freshman Mabel Chacon (Cabrillo HS) was tripped in the box and freshman Karina Sandoval (Universidad de Guadalajara) stepped in and converted the penalty kick.

Continuing their offensive attack, in which the Falcons outshot ECC Compton Center, 28-1 on the day, saw Carter maneuver around two defenders and then sent a beautiful crossing pass to freshman Lauren Nanez (La Mirada HS), who headed the ball in for a 3-0 lead. In the 60th minute, sophomore Jennifer Vega (Norwalk HS) found sophomore Susana Mendoza (Paloma Valley HS) open in the box, where she received the ball and drilled a shot into the net for a 4-0 lead. Within four more minutes it was 6-0, as Sandoval delivered another of her picture-perfect corner kicks that Vega was able to head into the net, while Carter, who had two goals and an assist, beat one defender to get a clear shot on goal that she buried into the net.

The scoring concluded in the 85th minute when freshman Alexis Ramirez (La Habra HS) crossed the ball into the six-yard box to freshman Tatiana Valentin (Santiago HS), who put the past the keeper for a goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Ropp (Lakewood HS) recorded her second straight shutout, and seventh on the year, while making just one save.
