Although the Cerritos College women's swimming team split their three-team South Coast Conference meet on Friday, they did see a school record get broken for the third time in as many weeks. The Falcons, who defeated Los Angeles Trade-Tech College, 220-35, suffered a 168.5-111.5 defeat against Chaffey College to keep their conference record even at 2-2. The team will now travel to Pasadena City College on Friday at 12:30 p.m. to face the host Lancers and East Los Angeles College.
Last week, freshman Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) set a new school record in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:04.89 in a conference meet. That record didn't last very long, as Gabayeron turned in a time of 10:59.22 to eclipse her own mark. It was one of three individual first place finishes on the day for Gabayeron, who also won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:22.60 and easily won the 100-yard breaststroke with a clocking of 1:13.68. She also swam the second leg of the first place 200-yard medley relay race that turned in a time of 2:04.00 and consisted of freshman Joselin Figueroa (Paramount HS), Gabayeron, sophomore Karen Aguirre (Downey HS) and sophomore Melinda Guevara (Cerritos HS).
Freshman Yuridia Vela (Schurr HS) captured the 100-yard IM in a time of 1:10.69, while her time of 2:10.37 in the 200-yard freestyle was good for second place. Freshman Sharon Ku (Cerritos HS) also checked in with a pair of second places, posting a time of 37.11 in the 50-yard breaststroke and 1:23.51 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Aguirre came in second place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:10.92, while her time of 1:11.19 in the 100-yard backstroke also earned her a second place. Figueroa finished in third place in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:14.19, while she took second in the 50-yard backstroke at 31.55 and freshman Brittany Hart (Mayfair HS) was third in 34.51.
Guevara ended the day with a pair of third place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (28.14) and 100-yard freestyle (1:02.29), while she swam the third leg of the 400-yard freestyle that came in second place. She was joined by freshman Brenda Ovando (Montebello HS), freshman Janine Loera (Paramount HS) and Vela to turn in a time of 4:18.56.
