Although she didn't set any school records, freshman Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) won one event and took second place in another, as she helped the Cerritos College swimming team finish in seventh place at the Pasadena Invitational with 245 points, one point ahead of South Coast Conference rival Mt. San Antonio College. A pair of other conference opponents, Chaffey College (274 team points) and the host Lancers (266 points) finished ahead of the Falcons. Cerritos, who will send their divers to the SCC Championships at El Camino College this weekend, will follow that up by competing in the SCC Championships the following weekend at Pasadena City College.
In the five individual races she competed, Gabayeron finished no lower than seventh place, while she won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:20.28, which was two seconds shy of the school record. She missed out on her second overall win in the 200-yard freestyle when her time of 2:00.24 was beaten by Jacelyn Youngerman of Cypress College, who touched up in 2:00.04. Before the end of the invitational, Gabayeron would also come in fourth place in the 200-yard IM (2:18.14), fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (56.14) and seventh in the 100-yard IM with a time of 1:05.57.
Freshman Yuridia Vela (Schurr HS) also had a busy weekend, coming in seventh in the 3-meter diving and eighth in the 1-meter diving competition. Additionally, she won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:27.76, with teammates Brittany Hart (Mayfair HS) and Joselin Figueroa (Paramount HS) coming in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Vela's time of 1:08.9 was also good enough for 14th place in the 100-yard backstroke. Freshman Sharon Ku (Cerritos HS) was third in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 3:00.23, while her time of 36.75 put her in 18th place in the 50-yard breaststroke.
In relay events, the 400-yard freestyle quartet of Gabayeron, sophomore Melinda Guevara (Cerritos HS), freshman Janine Loera (Paramount HS) and Vela came in eighth place in 4:00.25, while Figueroa, Gabayeron, Vela and Guevara also came in eighth place in the 200-yard medley relay with a clocking of 2:01.35. A time of 1:49.16 in the too-yard freestyle relay was good for 11th place for Guevara, Figueroa, Vela and Gabayeron, with the same team placing 13th in the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 4:37.97.
