With their 14-3 South Coast Conference win over visiting El Camino College on Wednesday, the Cerritos College women's water polo team remains in a tie for first place in conference play. The Falcons (9-5, 4-0), winners of four in a row, will play a 10:00 a.m. non-conference game at Golden West College (10-5) on Friday.
The Cerritos defense recorded 15 steals against the Warriors (4-5, 3-1), who also came into the game undefeated in SCC play.
Leading 5-1 at intermission, thanks to their defense and freshman goalie Jayden-Starr Smith (Buena Park HS), the Falcons were able to turn up the heat in the second half.
After El Camino scored the first goal of the second half, Cerritos recorded nine consecutive goals to put the game out of reach.
The Falcons had four different goal scorers to start the third period before Isabel Guillen (Whittier HS) posted consecutive goals by the end of the stanza, while Ceci Ortiz-Miranda (El Rancho HS) posted two straight goals in the fourth period.
Monserrat Rodriguez (Western HS) led the defense with seven steals to go along with her four assists and three goals, with four different players scoring twice. Smith ended the game with six saves.
