One of the main reasons the Cerritos College women's track and field team is a contender for the CCCAA State Championship each year is due to the amount of points they earn in field events. The Falcons, who won their second straight state title, and sixth in the last 11 years, have been fortunate to have the services of throws coach Lloyd Higgins. On August 1-2 at the Linq Hotel in Las Vegas, NV, Higgins was honored as the 5CTCA Assistant Coach of the Year.
During the 2016 season, Higgins helped coach Destiny Talalemotu to three state championships in the throws event, which tied a CCCAA state record. Adding the two she won in her freshman season, Talalemotu set a new state record for five career throwing state championships. But it was the tutelage of Higgins that helped Talalemotu - and the rest of the throwers - that has helped push the teams to their state titles over the years.
Since 2010, the Falcon women's throwers have set new school records in all four of the throws events, while Top 5 marks have in 18 of the 20 spots in the record book have come under the direction of Higgins. One of his most successful athletes, discus thrower Whitney Ashley went on to win an NCAA National Championship at San Diego State University and has qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics. She also came in first place at the US Olympic trials.
