A six-run first inning, followed by three more runs in the second inning were enough for the Cerritos College baseball team to register a convincing 14-1 South Coast Conference victory over host Rio Hondo College on Friday. The Falcons (28-9, 15-6) close out their regular season with a three-game set against Los Angeles Harbor College with the first game slated for 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Kincaid Field.

The first inning saw freshman first baseman Wyatt Ormonde (Long Beach Millikan HS) add to his school-record home run total, as he launched a three-run bomb to get the scoring started. It was his 13th of the year and gives him 61 RBI on the season. He's also just the second player in school history to drive in more than 60 runs and is closing in on the school record of 73, which was set by Brian Hunter in 1987.

The inning continued with sophomore outfielder Isaiah Rios (St. John Bosco HS) drawing a walk, with sophomore second baseman Dylan Immel (El Segundo HS) slapping a single. The bases were loaded when freshman third baseman Mateo Heredia (El Segundo HS) walked, which set the table for freshman shortstop Jake Fowler (Los Alamitos HS) to drive in a pair with a single. Sophomore outfielder Evan Saito (Torrance HS) closed out the scoring when he reached on a error, which plated a run.

Sophomore pitcher Derek Valdez (Los Alamitos HS) received all the run support he would need, as he tossed the first seven innings and allowed one run (unearned), while scattering five hits. Valdez (10-2) became the first Cerritos pitcher since John Ortega (2007-08) to win over 10 games in both seasons. Ortega won 10 games as a freshman and 11 his sophomore year, while Valdez had 13 wins in his freshman campaign. Freshmen Troy Sonoqui (Long Beach Millikan HS) and AJ Gonzalez (Gahr HS) each tossed an inning in relief and limited the Roadrunners to just one hit.

The onslaught continued in the second inning when Ormonde led off with a single and advanced to third base on a double by Rios. A sacrifice fly by Immel brought in the first of three runs in the inning, while Saito doubled in the other two runs with two outs.

Single runs in the fifth and sixth innings added to the lead, while Cerritos scored three more times in the ninth inning. With the majority of the starters out of the game, reserves provided the offense. Freshman second baseman Israel Espinoza (Warren HS) led off with a walk, while Heredia followed with another free pass. Sophomore catcher Nate Gardenswartz (Long Beach Wilson HS) doubled in the first run, with Fowler driving in another run on a ground out. Freshman pinch-hitter Julian Arellano (Downey HS) brought in the final run of the game with a sacrifice fly.

Ormonde finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with three walks, three RBI and scored a pair of runs, while Saito was 2-for-6 with two RBI. Fowler drove in three runs on a pair of hits, with freshman outfielder Owen Martin (Narbonne HS) also posting a pair of hits and drove in a run. Nine different players had at least one hit, while eight drove in runs.
